About

That Standards Guy is the online persona of Karl Dawson, a web developer living and working in Ipswich, England.

I'm a member of the Guild of Accessible Web Designers and the Web Standards Group and team member at Accessites—an awards site to recognise accessible and usable websites.

I specialise as a front-end developer and worry about the minutae of semantic (X)HTML and CSS, accessibility, microformats, typographic rhythm and grid design. I also care about the user experience and remind myself constantly of visitor site goals when working with clients and their aims.

That Standards Guy is proudly powered by WordPress using my own “StrictlyTSG v3.0” theme. Site Policies.

Future of Web Design, April 2007

The Future of Web Design (FOWD) is a one day event focusing on trends, best practice and inspiration for contemporary web design, featuring leading design experts. Sign up before the end of January and get in for £59 +VAT. Quite reasonable I thought so I’ve signed up out of my own pocket (well, OK, the credit card). If you miss the window the price will be £85 (+VAT I assume).

Head on over to the official site for the full skinny and then sign yourself up via Upcoming.org. Hope to see some of you there!

@media 2007 website launched

The @media conference has a reputation for being one of the world’s foremost events for web designers. With a focus on best practices and the cutting-edge, @media is an educational, content-rich, sociable special event for tuned-in, enthusiastic web professionals.

Now a global phenomenon with dates for San Francisco and Hong Kong as well as good old London this has got to be on everyone’s wish list? What a great line up across the board but look at who’s coming to London! I’m going to have to flex the plastic myself this year I reckon to listen and hopefully meet some more web heroes.

So, who else is going?

Framework update

Apologies to everyone in RSS land I’ve updated the CSS framework post so you’ll get that post and this one telling you of the changes. Essentially, I have added some basic version information to each file, including the downloadable .zip and more interestingly added some vertical rhythm to the headings and paragraphs based on Richard Rutter’s excellent “24 ways” post.
